Tractor Safety Rules Every Farmer Must Know

A tractor is powerful machinery, and safety must always come first. These essential rules protect you, your family and your workers on the field and the road.

A tractor is a farmer's most valuable helper, but it is also heavy, powerful machinery that must be respected. Every year, avoidable accidents happen because of small lapses in safety. The good news is that almost all of them are preventable with a few simple habits. Whether you are a new owner or a seasoned operator, these safety rules are worth revisiting.

Safe Operation on the Field

Always sit properly in the operator's seat, keep a firm grip on the wheel, and drive at a controlled speed — especially on slopes, bunds and near ditches. Never allow anyone to ride on the tractor, mudguards or a loaded trolley.

  • Slow down on turns, slopes and uneven ground
  • Engage the correct gear before descending a slope
  • Never carry passengers on the tractor or trolley
  • Keep children well away from the working machine

PTO and Implement Safety

A rotating PTO shaft can be deadly. Always keep the PTO guard in place, wear close-fitting clothes, and never step over a running shaft. Switch off the engine and disengage the PTO before cleaning, adjusting or unblocking any implement.

Road Safety With Trolleys

Overloading and poor visibility cause many road accidents. Do not overload the trolley, use reflectors and lights at night, and fit the recommended braking system. Drive defensively and obey traffic rules on public roads.

  • Never overload the trolley beyond safe limits
  • Use working lights and reflectors after dark
  • Maintain trolley brakes and secure the load

Protect Yourself and Others

Read your Farmtrac operator's manual, keep the tractor well maintained, and stay alert — never operate when tired or unwell. A few seconds of caution can prevent a lifetime of regret.

No amount of work is worth an injury — a safe farmer is a productive farmer for many more seasons to come.
